The last part about someone being fired for learning too much reminded me of something funny from graduate school.

I was sitting in on a graduate physics class (I was  Ph.D. student who had filled all requirements) with permission from the instructor, but I was not officially auditing the class.

One of the other students jokingly said "Hey, he's learning for FREE!"  Everyone laughed because the atmosphere of physics graduate programs is still pretty 'free' in both the freedom and beer (most if not all students are on fellowships) sense.  That's obviously not the case at some companies.

Your story reminds me of one of my favorite parts of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance when Pirsig describes that incredibly powerful phenomenon where a person's learning becomes self-directed.

He'd no longer be a grade-motivated person. He'd be a knowledge-motivated person. He would need no external pushing to learn. His push would come from the inside. ... Motivation of this sort, once it catches hold, is a ferocious force.  page 197
