The last part about someone being fired for learning too much reminded me of something funny from graduate school.
I was sitting in on a graduate physics class (I was Ph.D. student who had filled all requirements) with permission from the instructor, but I was not officially auditing the class.
One of the other students jokingly said "Hey, he's learning for FREE!" Everyone laughed because the atmosphere of physics graduate programs is still pretty 'free' in both the freedom and beer (most if not all students are on fellowships) sense. That's obviously not the case at some companies.
