The link here between beauty and usefulness is not necessarily that of tension between conflicting goals, instead I prefer to think in terms of the Bauhaus movement's axiom "form follows function" - something can be beautiful if it does it's job very well, with the minimum of extraneous detail, features or 'ornamentation' as Bauhaus referred to it.
